Meeting a hero

Bosco! (2/2).jpgIt’s always dangerous meeting your heroes. I was apprehensive about this one, as this is one that goes way back to the days when I was still grazing my knees and learning ABCs.

Yesterday, I met Bosco. Those of us of a certain generation grew up watching this little cheeky chap and his pals. Looking back at the DVDs of the show that were released a few years ago it’s amazing to see how such simple things brought little ones such wonder and contentment.

Meeting Bosco was strange, mainly because the second Bosco started talking I fell under the spell like I did about 20 years ago. I was talking to Bosco face to face. Still has funny, cheeky and witty as ever – it was the most enjoyable and bizarre experience I’ve had in a long time.

Bosco! (1/2).jpgI’d really love to see Bosco back on the telly here. Such a fantastic character who hasn’t not lost anything over the years since he first took to the RTE screen. We’ve got plenty of talent in the country who’d only love to have a show like that to work on from film makers to young presenters to animators and beyond. It could be a great showcase for Irish creative talent, I think. Anyone in RTE listening or want to get a petition going or is it time Bosco started broadcasting online?

Happy Birthday, Nana!

Nana who likes iPhone! It’s my Nana’s birthday today. She’s marking off a fantastic 86 years today, an age I think I could only dream of reaching.

She’s a hugely important person in my life. I effectively grew up with her, being the first grandchild she had because my parents were building or house when I was born so I settled into Nana’s cosy cottage from pretty much day one. In the 25 and a bit years since  I’ve learned so much from her.

She’s a fantastic woman and I love going down there to spend a few hours chit-chatting, giving out about the government and drinking tea (or something stronger if she could only convince you to) with her. Can’t wait to see her on Friday.

Happy birthday, Nana & here’s to many more :)

Context is king

My dad (farmer) makes me LOL

I stumbled over this on my phone again last night. I love the speed and efficiency that texting and tweeting offers but sometimes things just get so lost in translation or, as in this case, lost in context.

To set the scene: I had sent my dad a photo of a bunch of us having lovely creamy pints in the Storehouse and wishing him a happy Paddy’s day. It’s also important to point out here that he is a dairy farmer and the twins being referenced were newborns of the bovine variety.

Can’t wait to show it to him at the weekend after a few creamy pints :)

Getting to the Irish Blog Awards 2010

G-g-g-galway!
G-g-g-galway!

A weshterner living in Dublin for a number of years sans automobile I’ve tried pretty much every form of public transport between Dublin and Galway. If you haven’t decided how you’re getting to this year’s blog awards yet then this may be useful:

Train

Goes from Heuston, about 5/6 services per day. You can nab some nice €10 fares online in either direction but only on selected services. Otherwise it’s about €50 return for an adult. Journey takes about 2.5hrs on average.

Bus

Thanks to the opening of the motorway from Galway to Dublin late last year the bus journey between the cities has been made super comfortable and as fast as the train. It’s also more affordable than the train so all round win. Buses will drop you at Galway’s Coach Station which is a stone’s throw from Eyre Square and IBA2010 partytime.

GoBus

GoBus offer a non-stop service with 14 buses a day between the cities. Here’s the timetable, you can book online here and for those of you who need to escape Galway early there’s late night services at 01:45 and 03:45 from Galway. It’s €20 return to Dublin City, also serves the airport for an extra few quid. Pick-up is at the Ulster Bank HQ on the south quays in Dublin City Centre.

Citylink

Citylink offer both direct and in-direct services between the cities (take care when hopping on that you’re on the correct one!) and there’s heaps of times to choose from. Here’s the timetable (PDF sadly), you can book online at the website and like GoBus  you can do a late nighter run back to Dublin at 01:15, 01:30, 03:30. Pick up is outside Bermingham’s camera shop on the south quays. They’re around the €20 return mark too. Some services run double-decker coaches on the service – awesome if you’re on top deck, not so awesome on lower deck.

Bus Eireann

It’s been about 8 years since I took a Bus Eireann bus to Galway, largely due to the half hour pitstop in the middle in Athlone that they used to do making the journey ridiculously long. I don’t know if they do direct services via the motorway – never seen them on it – but I’d avoid them anyway.

Fly

If you’re flush you can go by air via Aer Arann – it’s like getting a flying minibus but it’ll get you there super quick.

Lost?

You shouldn’t be coz Galway is real small and friendly but if you are feel free to tweet me @cloudsteph at any stage.

Jack L – ten years on

So I’m going up to Vicar St later to hear Jack L belt out some tunes with the backing of a band and a gospel choir. It should be mega.

I also just realised this morning that it’s 10 years to the date since the first Jack L gig I went to.

Before you brand me a nut/stalker/psycho fan (well, not the bad sort) I remember by association with another event. It was for my best buddy’s 15th birthday celebration. Shame I haven’t a similar excuse for the 40-odd other times I went to hear him crooning after that :)

I’m reeling a little at the thought of it being so long since that occasion. It’s significant in so many strange ways, like the fact that it’s responsible for me getting into the business of designing and building websites (my first was a fan community website), made me fall in love with live music and allowed me to meet some brilliant people some of whom I still call friends today. He introduced me to the music of Jacques Brel, Sinatra, Jeff Buckley and made me feel a little less ridiculous about getting up and singing in public, something I got plenty of slagging for while still in school.

It’s been a good ten. Where does the time go?!

Yeah yeah, still a bit of a fangirl I'm afraid
