First off, props to Gav for TwitPic-ing progress on the 360 stage construction that’s going on up at Croker – looking epic!
Today I’m picking out another song from Achtung Baby today, which is my favourite U2 album by a mile. When rooting around on YouTube for a video, I learned that the ‘single version’ was quite different and not nearly as raw & punchy as the original. According to U2.com, the single released was the ‘Temple Bar Edit‘. Recorded after a night in Dorans or The Mezz eh lads?
So forgive the visuals and enjoy the sounds, a compromise worthwhile I think you’ll agree
I had great fun at SPWC Dublin this weekend, so much so I’m still trying to gather together all my thoughts for a proper blog post on the event. Phil made the trip down with his kick-ass camera & got very snap happy (to the tune of over 1600 photos it seems).
Bubbles were a huge hit with kids of all ages (me included) but they are difficult little feckers to capture on camera. He’s managed to capture some here pretty awesomely (if I may say so myself)! Really looking forward to seeing the rest of the pics from the weekend, plenty great stuff on pix.ie whetting the appetite.
So much blogging to catch up on both here and on Culch.ie will probably be burning the midnight oil tonight. Here’s a start:
Gardiner Street Gospel Choir were off the scale brilliant on Saturday night at The Helix, DCU. Everyone I went with and spoke to seemed to be on a buzz after it. Amazing show & fair play to them for doing their weekly gig in St. Francis Xavier’s Church the following evening – can’t have been easy! Well done to all involved, major blog post to come including MP3s of the gig. Paul May has some great shots of the guys n gals on Flickr.
Delorentos are offering up a free MP3 of ‘You Can Make Sound‘ over here.
Curious Wines are supporting a great cause – donate to Lesley adn Will’s fund and you’re in a draw for a whopping €110 worth of tasty vino. These guys are cycling 300km for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Wow.
Darragh talks about the set of the latest production at The Abbey over on Culch.ie – as he says photos really don’t do it justice, it’s almost worth going along to The Last Days of a Reluctant Tyrant just for the set alone.
I’ve always had an interest in it. I bought my first camera when I was about 10, a purple 110mm which I adored & took everywhere with me. When that broke (and I was too) I used 35mm disposables. Friends got me a Kodak APS with zoom (fancy!) for my 18th birthday from which I have loads of photos stashed away at home in Clare. My parents bought me the digital one I have now for my 21st and it’s pretty decent as compact digitals go. And now I want to upgrade again.
So - what & where should I be looking at for an entry level D-SLR? I’ve had a hankering for one for ages but I don’t spend large amounts of money on gadgets unless I’m going to put them to use. The reason I think that I don’t print photos any more is because the camera I have just isn’t delivering the level of quality I can be happy to frame or stick on my wall & I really want to start printing photos again.
Lately I came across this box of photos & found the contact sheet whereon a photo of 2 people very dear to my heart peered out. I really want to get a copy of it printed so that’s my next challenge to you photographers & enthusiasts - where (in Dublin preferrably) can I take my APS film to get decent prints?
It’s hard to beat stumbling over a box such as the one above and rooting through it to find all sorts of gems (& bombs of course) while taking a little trip down memory lane. It’s a wonderful social thing too – when visiting a friend lately I was handed a photo album for the first time in ages & thumbing through it sparked all sorts of weird, wondeful & unexpected little conversations that only pictures could inspire.
All your thoughts & advice much appreciated – see you on a photowalk some time soon I hope
Stumbled across this photo the other day – it was one of the first I took with my little red camera that my dad got me for my 21st ChristmasBirthday (born 26th Dec, this is what it has become). The beach at home in the month of January. Nature is stunning.
Des wrote a lovely post about the death of the ‘desktop metaphor’ over on the Contrast blog.
Stu is climbing the viral charts in the Buzzfeed competition with his fantastic ‘Songs Reimagined as Alert Boxes‘. You have got to check them out!
Got my tickets in the post for the closing gala concert at the Cork International Choral Festival yesterday. It’s taking place on the May bank holiday weekend and there’s loads of international choral music on all over the city for the long weekend. As if you needed a reason to visit Cork anyway.

An article in The Examiner today that seems to be essentially saying that newspapers are better than blogs amongst other bizarre and questionable things. Get ready to face-palm.
